Bercan Kilic, who once worked on the aerodynamics of Red Bull Racing, has now turned his attention to teaching robots to work in factories. His Munich-based startup, microagi, has raised a staggering $55 million in funding, making it the largest seed round secured by a German startup. This investment comes at a time when the robotics and physical AI sectors are experiencing a surge in interest, driven by the integration of AI into machines, falling hardware costs, labor shortages, and the need to reshore supply chains. Kilic's journey began with a desire to apply his engineering skills to a more significant challenge, addressing the labor shortages in Europe and the US by deploying robots in factories. He recognized the limitations of existing robotics models, which are akin to children in their learning capabilities, and thus, microagi was born. The company's unique approach involves recording workers using cameras and sensor-equipped gloves to train existing robotics models for specific factory tasks. This data-driven method is a game-changer, as it bridges the '100,000-year data gap' between the training data available for robots and chatbots. By collecting first-person footage of physical tasks, microagi's consumer-facing arm, shift, has gained traction, offering free services like apartment cleanings and private chefs.
